Poverty Summit: Community Conversation Kickoff
October 6, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far:
Nearly 200 attendees came to Eau Claire County’s first Poverty Summit on October 6th. Attendees came from all across the Chippewa Valley and Eau Claire County, and we had a great diversity of people that filled the room at Grace Lutheran Church.
After introductions and brief presentations about the Clear Vision goal and a snapshot of what poverty looks like, we broke out into table discussions where we focused on the issues we felt were important in our county. We gained input and participation from those directly affected in the community as well as organizational community members that work with the directly impacted. Once we defined our most prominent issues, we began to shed light on the challenges we would have to overcome to resolve said issues. After each table took some time to visualize what a “perfect” community would look like in the year 2025 and how this summit will take effect, and we took turns presenting our issues, challenges, and possibilities to the rest of the stakeholders.
- What are poverty and income insecurity issues you think are most pressing in Eau Claire County?
- What are challenges to addressing and overcoming the most pressing poverty & income insecurity issues?
- “Imagine it is 2025 and we have made significant changes regarding poverty and income insecurity throughout Eau Claire County. What would that look like to you?”
Now that we are all caught up, be sure to keep inviting others and bring all unique perspectives to this Poverty Summit. We’re excited for what’s next and we’ll see you next week at our second session, October 27th!
In October 2016 Clear Vision Eau Claire will convene a Poverty Summit, a citizen-led, multi-year, and multi-generational public engagement and problem solving project to identify and take action on critical community issues related to poverty and income inesecurity in Eau Claire County.
Concerns about living wage jobs, the rate of poverty, underemployment, and the related debilitating personal impacts on households with children were cited as major concerns in the 2015 Eau Claire City Comprehensive Plan. Poverty and income insecurity has also been identified as a significant concern by the Eau Claire Area School District, Eau Claire County, United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley, and the City/County Health Department Healthy Communities initiative.
The per capita poverty rate in Eau Claire County increased from 12.9% in 1980 to 14.5% in 2015. The poverty rate for the City of Eau Claire increased from 14.8% in 1980 to 17.7% in 2015. One in five children under 18 in Eau Claire County are food insecure (defined as limited or uncertain availability to healthy, adequate and safe food for a healthy and active lifestyle). Over 40% of the students enrolled in the Eau Claire Area School District qualify for free or reduced lunch.
This is event is open to the public and a way to get the community engaged. #PovertySummit
